As a parenthood startup, it's our responsibility to find a new way to deliver the technology parents need, in a way that minimises harm our environment.
How Bebello are making a difference
-
Carbon reduction
We dramatically reduce the amount of energy and carbon emissions associated with handwashing.
-
Eliminating waste
We're eliminating waste by operating a ‘fully circular’ business model.
-
Pathway to Net Zero
As a startup doing things very differently, we’re on a pathway to hit NetZero in 2026.
Handwashing. Whats the problem?
-
Handwashing = excessive water use
Most people handwash with the hot-tap running continuously. Each washing session typically takes 20 minutes and uses 20L of water.
With the average household doing 3 sessions per day, this uses 60L water per day.
-
Handwashing = high carbon emissions
Most homes heat water by burning gas, a fossil fuel.
Burning fossil fuels releases carbon into the atmosphere.
(Heating water contributes to roughly 30% of the UK's total carbon footprint)
Bebello Washer dramatically reduces water and energy use
Bebello Washer uses up to 90% less water, and 80% less energy than regular handwashing for a comparable load.
This means Bebello Washer emits 78% less carbon per handwashing session!
If a clean electricity supply is used to power bebello washer, carbon emissions can be reduced to practically zero.
Bebello Detergent
Bebello Detergent is made of natural ingredients and is 100% biodegradable.
Bebello Detergent is supplied in reusable and 100% recyclable aluminium bottles.
Bebello is the Circular Economy in action
The Circular economy places an emphasis on re-use and repair, keeping products our of landfill and recycling streams. This approach greatly reduces both waste creation and the carbon footprint of delivering the technologies we need to live a modern life (or survive day-to-day as a new parent!)
With a Recycling economy, products are theoretically recycled into new products. The reality is just 16% of waste is recycled, so it is clear that recycling is not close to delivering the change the planet needs to see.
In the traditional Linear economy, also known as the take-make-waste economy, products are used for a short time, then thrown away. This pollutes the environment, and harms people.
Core principles of the circular economy
-
Reduce
We prioritise rental, meaning we reduce the number of products that need to be made. This greatly reduces emissions from manufacturing and transportation.
-
Re-use
We sell our products with a buy-back condition. This means bebello are responsible for what happens to the product next. Once we have bought the product back, we refurbish it and it enters the rental market.
-
Recycle
Eventually components will wear out and require replacement. Surfaces will get scratched and parts will be replaced. Because Bebello own the product, we ensure any waste streams are responsibly recycled and turned back into new products. This ensures zero waste to landfill.
Our position on financial and environmental sustainability
Economic growth is traditionally tied to growth in the burning of fossil fuels, polluting the air and warming our planet. This growth has also led to increasing growth in waste, polluting our environment.
Economic growth tied to increased pollution is quickly pushing humanity towards a tipping point where the earth will become uninhabitable.
We believe the circular economy presents the opportunity to achieve economic growth that is decoupled from growth in emissions and waste.
If all companies can find ways to implement the circular economy it will enable us to thrive within our planetary boundaries, in a world free of pollution. We should be doing everything we can to this new world as soon as we possibly can.
We hope bebello can be an example of success that others can follow. And if we fail, we hope others learn from our mistakes.
It’s tricky and we’re not perfect, but we are committed to getting it right. We are always happy to discuss our approach, so please drop us a line at sustainability@bebello.club, or join the movement by engaging with our social channels.
